His parents originated from Surrey but his brother and sister lived in Broad Street Leominster. He was serving as a Hurricane Pilot in 56 Squadron, known as the “Fire Birds”, one of the oldest and most successful squadrons of the Royal Air Force and still in operation today.
On 5th February 1941 he took off from RAF North Weald in Essex in a mk1 Hurricane serial no P3123 on a routine patrol over the French Coast. The aircraft failed to return, the exact circumstances of his death are not clear, but he is buried in the communal cemetery of Wimille, a small village between Boulogne and Calais
